What We Believe

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is rooted in the Reformed Tradition — a set of beliefs that go back to John Calvin in the 1500s. We believe that God is sovereign over all things. We should serve others in the world, build communities where everyone can thrive, give generously of what we have, stay watchful against the misuse of power, and work towards a just society that includes everyone.

We believe that our salvation through Jesus Christ is a gift from God, not something we earn. Sharing this Good News is the responsibility of ministers and every member of the church. Our church governance reflects this: clergy and regular members work together at every level, and leadership is open to women, men, and nonbinary people alike.
